“Screaming is bad for the voice, but it’s good for the heart.” — Conor Oberst
The same could be said for speaking, laughing, gabbing and partying at writers’ conferences. I returned home from the fabulous Left Coast Crime mystery/thriller convention on Friday with new friendships and fun memories, but very little voice. The worthy price to pay will definitely make today’s radio show more interesting! At first I thought, AWESOME! I’ll sound so sexy-sultry-cool on Monday. (LOL) Then the croaking frog sounds cropped up…

The ordeal has had me pondering voices, and what we find sexy about them. A few interesting tidbits:
♦ Studies have shown that women generally find husky male voices sexier than less husky, higher pitched voices. We prefer voices that sound masculine and strong, but not aggressive. Think Denzel Washington or George Clooney.
♦ Although men and women tend to lower the pitch of our voices when we’re attracted to someone, men tend to find breathy, high, but not too high, pitched female voices sexiest. Marilyn Monroe is a prime example.
♦ While research and expert insight on why all of this is the case makes sense (estrogen and testosterone levels are a biggie), I treasure the fact that much like aesthetics, the voices of people we adore only grow more attractive to us and our adoration increases.
“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth.” — Jess C. Scott
I’ll go delve further into sexy voice studies and what experts believe about the findings on today’s show, which will also feature the sexy voice of Nick Hawk of Showtimes’ Gigolos I had a fabulous chat with Nick last week, discussing his experience as a gigilo turned TV star, what his Midwestern family thinks of his work, his line of sex toys (including a dildo clone of his penis with movable balls—you know I asked about that!) and more.
You can listen and subscribe to Girl Boner Radio podcasts via iTunes here. You can also listen via Global Voice Broadcasting and Stitcher Radio. Nick also agreed to a blog interview, so stay tuned here for more!
What do you find sexy in a voice? Whose do you find sexiest? Have you always loved the sound of your partner’s voice alluring—or did it grow on you? If you’ve seen Gigolos, what do you think of it? I love hearing your thoughts!
Does he always walk around trousers undone holding his vest at an unfeasible angle August? Not that I am jealous of his physique. Or his personlised dildo for that matter!
I’m sure you have countless admirable qualities, Jim! And yes, Nick does often appear shirtless and in a multitude of, er, angles, on the show. I believe he sells a make-your-own dildo kit!
Nothing like being a multi-talented multi-tasker!
Very interesting re: what men vs women find attractive in voices. I am using this in future fiction work (everything’s material!).
So true, Amy! I’m fascinated, too.
I absolutely LOVE Lauren’s voice. I don’t know how to describe why though. It is sort of like why do we like certain kinds of music but not other kinds of music? I guess her voice just tickles my ear drum fancy. Great topic, August!
Love that, Steve! I can relate. I imagine voice attraction can be as seemingly hard to pinpoint as who we end up falling for, and grows as love does. Your music analogy’s a great one!
While I love a good, clear soprano singing voice, I don’t care much for high, thin speaking voices. But then, I thought Marilyn Monroe was about as sexy as a female hippopotamus.
To each their own, David! Thank goodness.
Hi, women’s voices are wonderful. Often they define the woman. My favorite right now is Clare Robinson on the Food Network. It’s smoky, Southern (not too) and the surrounding er, package is lovely. And to David N. Walker: If Marilyn Monroe whispered in my ear I would do ANYTHING, willingly. She was more tan a sex symbol.
Smoky can be very sexy! And I agree about Marilyn. I’ve been reading a collection of her letters and poetry — a beauty inside and out.
The sexiest male character’s voice is Clay Danvers in Bitten and Kelley Armstrong’s other Women of the Otherworld books. Just the way he says “darlin” – mmm.
Sounds scrumptious! “Darlin” is such a sweet word, especially formed in the right mouth.
The sexiest female voice? The one saying, Yes!
LOL Love it, Laurie!
Thought you might.
I have to admit, there are a few voices I do think are sexy (or have been to me years ago). One of them was Sean Connery’s voice for example… “Charles Dance’s” voice as well.
By now I think Sheemar Moore does have an exceptionally sexy voice.
And of course, so does my boyfriend. There is a reason I do get goose bumps talking to him.
Ooh, Sean Connery. Great one! So sweet about your beau. There’s something ultra sexy about the voice of that special someone.
I guess I have a thing for older male voices. Some of all time faves: Jeremy Irons, Gabriel Byrne, and Keith Carradine. They’re all a bit like honeyed velvet. Mmmmm
Honeyed velvet — exactly! Great picks, Jess.
His is very pretty *fans self* I love rich, deep, accented voices that speak with authority and use big words.
LOL Intelligence and experience — YUM.
I go more with the “feels safe” thing on voices. If a woman is talking about me and it’s nice, I find it sexier than most anything else.
