Sex Ed, Scandinavians and Samosas: What It’s Like to be Girl Boner’s Mom

April 16, 2014

Hello wonderful peeps! I hope you’re having a brilliant week.

This is a short little post to let you know about a very special Girl Boner Radio interview I conducted last week. My mom visited from Minnesota, and was kind (and some would say bold) enough to chat with me on the air. We discussed her unique and spontaneous sex education in India and the states, her dating horror stories, tips for marital success and her thoughts on being “Girl Boner’s mom.”

We’d planned on recording a short clip to insert in another show, and it turned into the whole shebang! (You’ll notice that I started to wrap things up, and we kept on going. LOL) Advance apologies for my horrible attempt at a Minnesota accent; I was nudged into telling a couple of Scandinavian sex jokes. To listen or download the episode via iTunes, click this link:

If you listened, what did you think? What sex-related chats have you had with your parents? If you haven’t had any, what’s stopping you? I love hearing from you! ♥

August, Can’t wait to hear it. Also have a tip for you: an old friend of mine has written two very intriguing sex books, and would be a great guest…but he lives on his boat on the other side of the world, literally…though he may be in the us right now for a while. If not, maybe phone interview? Check out Mike Riley’s books on amazon. I’ll try to send a link. Is this the best way, or a good way to email you? Hugs from a big fan, Jennifer

Oh, I’m going to listen to this. We’ll be off for Easter Holiday for four days and I’ll have time.
No Sex talk with my parents… they belong to a generation where talking about sex was called improper and bad manners.
My Mom has explained me “technically” how it works – but that was about it – except that she warned me to get pregnant before being married, otherwise she’ throw me out of the house… You definitely have a cool Mom!

      Hope you enjoy it, Raani!

I was a bit surprised, and very delighted, that my mom agreed to the chat. She was definitely raised to never discuss anything related to “down there.” We talked about that very issue!

His writing is odd and sometimes he’ll come off like a sexist, but he’s not really…it is a riot. And no, I did NOT edit his books–though he needs an editor badly! http://www.amazon.com/Turn-your-Woman-Raving-Nymphomanaic-ebook/dp/B00DXMMRSA/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1397688358&sr=1-1&keywords=How+to+Turn+your+Woman+into+a+Raving+Nymphomanaic

I loved it! I said before, you’re mom has led a fascinating life – definitely memoir worthy! I truly enjoyed listening to the two of you talk so frankly.

Sex talk from my mother included the following gems:

“I’ll tell you about it when you’re older.”

“Let’s put it this way: the baby gets in the same way it comes out,”

“If you’re thinking about having sex, promise me you’ll come talk to me first.” I was 19 then. The unspoken, but understood, fact was that she would try to talk me out of it.

When she learned (not through me) that I stopped being a virgin just before I turned 21, she didn’t speak to me for six weeks. I was 23 years old!

I’m estranged by choice from my parents. I grew up in a volatile and abusive home. I want something different for my own children. When they were curious, at 8 and 11, about how condoms worked, we got some zucchini from the fridge, and they learned how to put them on. We talked about hows and whys and other birth control, and how wily sperm are.

We’ve pretty much always talked about sex, at levels the kids were able to understand and be comfortable with, We want them to know that sex is natural, and not something to be ashamed of.

I’ve been married nearly 17 years to a wonderful man who has never once regretted that I wasn’t a virgin when we met (largely because, well, I know how to do some things!) He loves when I rad him bits of my erortica, or ask him to help me test a scene.

Yet my mother still thinks that I will one day be ashamed that I didn’t “save myself” for a man I didn’t even meet until I was 27!

I want ot be a mom more like yours than my own, in that regard! =D

Wow, Shan Jeniah. What a strong and empowered woman you are! Not to mention a stellar mom.

I may ask to interview you for a GB project at some point. Regardless, thanks for sharing!
