“You’re so. . . colorful. You’re not hiding any more.”
Hearing my then modeling agent, Paul, state these words, I paused, glimpsed my reflection in a wall mirror and realized he was right.
Without noticing it in recent months, I had shifted from wearing mostly dark, bland colors to vibrant tones. Rather than keeping my hair pulled back in a bun, it now fell loose around my shoulders in a way that matched my spirits: Let it flow! No flatting or restriction required.
I stood taller, with less tenseness in my shoulders. My whole life had brightened and calmed. And all of that started with journaling.
I had left a tumultuous relationship and side jobs I disliked, trusting what my heart had poured out onto pages. I needed out of the mismatched relationship, journaling helped me see, and to commit fully to acting—a career path that would lead me from Miami to Los Angeles, and later to full-time writing and all-things-Girl-Boner.
Journaling is a game changer.
Since starting my work in sexual empowerment, I have recommended journaling for almost everything. Want to increase your libido? Experience less sexual shame? Better embrace your appearance? Bolster intimacy with a partner? Decide whether or not to act on a fantasy? Try journaling!
Seriously.
To me, journaling ranks as high as solo play and sex toys for sexual self-discovery and inviting more pleasure into our lives. By providing a safe, private space to let our thoughts flow, without concern over others’ judgment, the practice can help us chip away at challenges, recognize our deepest desires and step into our most authentic selves. With a little guidance, the potential for good is even greater.
All of this is why I included writing prompts throughout Girl Boner, and why, when the notion of a companion journal came up with my publisher, I leapt at the chance. Initially, the journal was to release with Girl Boner and include 52 quotes or prompts, so you could use it as a weekly, year-long journal. While I really liked that idea, I love what it became far more: a collection of true stories, encouragement and journaling exercises to help you cultivate sexual joy and empowerment. 🙌🏾

I’m so grateful to Amberjack Publishing, my editor, Cherrita Lee, and my agent, Jill Marr, for helping me bring this book into the world, and to every reader and listener. As I mentioned in the live-streamed Girl Boner Radio event with Megan Ashley and Sex Coach Leigh of Queers Next Door, you are the heart of this work.
How has journaling influenced your life? Any questions about Girl Boner Journal? I’d love to hear from you.
