Healing From Abuse and How To Stop “Slut” Shaming

August 13, 2015

“It stops with us. Each time that we use [slut-shaming] words without thinking about it, we’re advocating for them.” — Sophie Ullett, actress/singer/survivor

If you’ve ever been bullied for wearing “sexy” clothes, having a particularly curvy figure, desiring sex, being sexually assaulted or having one or more sexual partners, you’ve been “slut” shamed—an epidemic that’s grown exponentially since the dawn of the internet.

Join August as she explores sexual bullying and healing from sexual abuse with actress and singer, Sophie Ullett. Sophie survived sexual abuse numerous times throughout her life, overcame alcohol abuse and now speaks openly about her experience with hopes of helping others.

Kait Scalisi, MPH, Girl Boner’s resident sex-pert, responds to a question from a woman who loves sexting but whose boyfriend feels it’s unwise. The tension they’re experiencing is tough, but surmountable.

You’ll also hear a teaser from UnSlut: A Documentary Film directed by previous guest and activist extraordinaire Emily Linden. To learn how you can arrange to have the movie shown in your community, visit www.unslutproject.com.

I cannot imagine a topic that is more important to women–certainly there are many, unfortunately–as a woman’s image of herself is built from within. Of course, this fine interview and thoughtful commentary reveal too many women allow their image to come from others. It is easy to do and has happened to many women, myself included. I am so glad women are making films to make it stop (The Unslut Project). Also, women like Sophie Ullett confidently speaking out on sexual abuse, reminding women it is never okay. As she says, slut shaming “stops with us.” Fine, fine work all of you are doing.

I truly despise the word “slut” and wish that word and term would just disappear completely! Could you please recommend some organizations or groups that focus on this issue that accept donations? I’d be honored to be able to be to help out in some way.
